CANADA’S NATIONAL MEN’S UNDER-18 TEAM FINISHES SEVENTH
AT 2010 IIHF WORLD UNDER-18 CHAMPIONSHIP

BOBRUISK, Belarus – Canada’s National Men’s Under-18 Team has finished in seventh place at the 2010 IIHF World Under-18 Championship after winning the relegation group with a 3-0 record. The finish is Canada’s lowest ever at the event since its debut in 2002.

Canada wrapped up relegation round play on Thursday with a 4-2 victory over Slovakia. The Canadians did all of their damage in the first period, taking a commanding 4-0 lead after 20 minutes. Steve Shipley (Illerton Ont./Owen Sound, OHL), Quinton Howden (Oakbank, Man./Moose Jaw, WHL), Ryan Spooner (Kanata, Ont./Peterborough, Ont.) and Christian Thomas (Toronto, Ont./Oshawa, OHL) scored the goals for Canada, while Shipley and Thomas also added assists for two-point performances.

In other relegation round play, Canada beat Latvia 5-1 on Wednesday to ensure it would not be relegated. Canada’s 11-3 preliminary-round victory over Belarus was carried over and also counted towards its final relegation round record.

Canada's roster includes 13 players from the Ontario Hockey League, seven (7) players from the Western Hockey League and two (2) players from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Eleven (11) players helped Canada's National Men's Summer Under-18 Team capture the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament in August 2009 in the Czech Republic.

Players and staff with Canada’s National Men’s Under-18 Team will return to Canada on Saturday, April 24.
